から言うと
Speaking in terms of, From the point of view of
Structure
(1)から言えば、 から言って
Explanation
The expression からいうと (which can be written with or without kanji) is used to present an opinion, judgment, or conclusion based on a specific perspective or set of criteria. The と here functions conditionally, which is why the alternative form から言えば is also grammatically correct and interchangeable.
This grammar pattern is always attached to a noun or noun phrase. The clause that follows will contain the speaker's assessment or thought based on that noun. It's similar to English phrases such as 'in terms of (A), (B)' or 'from the standpoint of (A), (B)'.
- 彼の成績から言うと、いい大学に入れるだろう。Judging from his grades, he'll probably get into a good university.
- 栄養から言えば、この食事はとても体にいい。In terms of nutrition, this meal is very good for you.
In some cases, particles like と or ば can be omitted, and the phrase から言って can be used as an alternative.
- みんなの反応から言って、パーティーは失敗だったみたいだ。Based on everyone's reactions, it seems the party was a failure.
Caution
This expression cannot directly follow a person's name because a person is not a 'basis for judgment'. Instead, you must attach it to a noun that describes the person's situation, such as 'name の 立場からいうと' (from name's position).
- 先生から言うと、この生徒は上手になりましたか?Speaking as the teacher, has this student improved? (Unnatural)
- 先生の立場からいうと、この生徒は上手になりましたか?Teacher, from your standpoint, has this student improved? (Natural)
- 医者の視点からいうと、この薬は安全ですか?From a doctor's point of view, is this medicine safe? (Natural)
Caution
Because からいうと is typically used for evaluations based on a broader context or situation, it sounds unnatural when used for judgments based on immediate, visual information. While not technically wrong, it's not how a native speaker would phrase it.
- 彼の服装から言うと、サラリーマンだと思う。Judging from his clothes, I think he's an office worker. (Not incorrect, but a little unnatural)
For judgments based purely on appearance, a better alternative would be から見ると, which is specifically used for making visual observations.
