~て初めて
For the first time, Not until, Only after, Only when, Only because
Structure
Explanation
て初めて is used to convey that a new realization or experience was possible only after a certain action took place. The structure Verb て初めて indicates that 'upon doing (A), for the first time (B) happened'. This is commonly translated as 'only when I did (A), did I (B)', or 'it wasn't until I did (A) that I (B)'.
- 親になって初めて、親のありがたみが分かった。It was only after becoming a parent that I truly appreciated my own parents.
- 一人で旅行して初めて、自分がどれだけ心配性か分かった。It wasn't until I traveled alone that I realized just how much of a worrier I am.
Note that with this grammar, the action (A) is not necessarily being performed for the very first time. Rather, it is the resulting awareness or state (B) that is being experienced for the first time.
- この洗濯機を使って初めて、乾燥機能がないことに気がついた。I didn't realize this washing machine lacked a dryer function until I used it.
Caution
In the past, both 始めて ('to begin') and 初めて ('for the first time') were sometimes used. However, in modern Japanese, using 始めて in this pattern is incorrect, as only 初めて properly carries the nuance of a first-time discovery.
- 説明書を読んで始めて、この製品の使い方が分かった。Commencing with reading the manual, I understood how to use this product.
- 説明書を読んで初めて、この製品の使い方が分かった。Only after reading the manual did I understand how to use this product.
