Explanation
To express the grounds or reason for a judgment in Japanese, the expression ことから is often used. It is constructed from the nominalizer こと and the case marking particle から. While its literal meaning is 'from the thing that is (A), (B) happens', it is typically understood as 'from the fact that (A), (B)' or 'based on (A), (B)'.
ことから can follow any clause, provided the preceding word is in a form that can directly modify a noun (the attributive form).
- あのビルの窓にたくさんの明かりがついていることから、まだ大勢の人が残業していることが分かる。From the fact that so many lights are on in that building's windows, you can tell a lot of people are still working overtime.
- 彼の両手がペンキだらけだったことから、彼は絵を描いていたのだと思った。From the fact that both of his hands were covered in paint, I figured he had been painting a picture.
- 犬がしきりにしっぽを振っていることから、喜んでいるのが伝わってきた。From the way the dog was wagging its tail excitedly, I could tell it was happy.
- これらのことから、このプロジェクトを継続するのは難しいと判断しました。Based on these points, we've determined that continuing this project will be difficult.
Caution
It is important to distinguish ことから ('from the fact that') from ことだから ('because/since'). In ことだから, から is a conjunction particle that shows a direct reason. With ことから, however, から is a case marking particle that indicates the basis or origin of a judgment.
- お弁当箱が空であることから、彼はもう昼食を済ませたことが分かる。From the fact that the lunch box is empty, you can tell he has already finished lunch.
