The adverb むしろ is used when a speaker wants to correct or clarify a previous statement by offering a more suitable alternative. It is commonly translated into English as 'rather' or 'on the contrary'.
Typically, むしろ is found at the start of a sentence or a new clause. It introduces the corrected or more fitting information that follows.
- 「ありがとう」って言うのはこっちだよ。むしろ僕が感謝したいよ。I'm the one who should be saying thank you. Rather, I'm the one who should be grateful.
- むしろ、もっと役に立つものを買った方がいいと思う。Instead, I think it would be better to buy something more useful.
Because むしろ introduces a more fitting option, it frequently appears with grammar patterns like より to explicitly state what is being compared.
- 電車で行くより、むしろ歩いて行った方が早いかもしれない。Rather than taking the train, it might actually be faster to walk.
- 私はコーヒーよりむしろ紅茶の方が好きです。Rather than coffee, I prefer tea.

The word むしろ is derived from the kanji 寧ろ, which carries the meaning of 'preferable'. This is the same kanji found in 丁寧 (polite/careful). Reflecting this origin, むしろ can sometimes be translated as 'preferably', indicating that the speaker is offering a carefully considered, more accurate statement.
- むしろ、あなたはゆっくり休んでほしいです。Preferably, I'd like you to get some rest. (Rather than you worrying about me, it would be better if you rested)
