決して〜ない
Never, By no means
Structure
決して + [い]Adjective[ない]
決して + [な]Adjective + ではない(1)
決して + Noun + ではない(1)
(1) じゃない
Explanation
On its own, 決して is the て-form of the verb 決する (to decide). However, it has a distinct role as a standalone adverb. In this capacity, 決して means 'definitely' or 'positively' and must be paired with a negative ending like ない to express strong denial, such as 'never (do something)', 'by no means (is something)', or 'under no circumstances'.
Similar to many Japanese adverbs, 決して can be placed either at the start of a sentence or immediately before the word it emphasizes (which will always be in a negative form).
- この話は大切な秘密だから、決して他の人には言わないでください。This is an important secret, so please, under no circumstances tell anyone else.
- 決して難しくないとは言えないです。By no means can I say that it isn't difficult.
- あのレストランは決して安くはないです。That restaurant is by no means cheap.
- 決してあなたのことが嫌いではないけど、今は一人になりたい。It's by no means that I dislike you, but I just want to be alone right now.
Although it is often translated as 'never', the core meaning of 決して is closer to 'decidedly not' or 'absolutely not', which serves to strongly underscore the negative part of the sentence.
Caution
Occasionally, 決して can appear with grammatical structures that are not explicitly negative, with ものか being a key example. The ものか structure is a forceful way of asserting that something will absolutely not happen or does not exist.
- この夢を決してあきらめるものか!There's no way I'm giving up on this dream!
- あんなやつに決して負けるものか!There is no way I'm going to lose to a guy like that!
