Explanation
This grammar pattern is formed by adding the noun 違い, meaning 'difference,' and the い-Adjective ない to the case marking particle に. It creates the meaning 'it must be (A)' or 'I am certain that (A)'.
に違いない can be attached to the plain form of verbs, い-Adjectives, な-Adjectives, and nouns.
- あの人は疲れているに違いない。顔色が悪いよ。That person must be tired. Their complexion looks pale.
- みんなが難しいと言っているから、その試験は難しいに違いない。Since everyone is saying it's difficult, that exam must be hard.
- 彼女は毎日チョコレートを食べている。チョコレートが大好きに違いない。She eats chocolate every day. She must love it.
- この箱はおばあちゃんからだ。きっと誕生日のプレゼントに違いない。This box is from my grandma. I'm sure it's my birthday present.
Fun Fact
In this structure, the particle に indicates a particular state or situation. 違いない then asserts that there is no 'difference' or 'error' in that assessment. Therefore, a very literal interpretation of に違いない would be 'in (A), there is no mistake'.
- 道で泣いている人がいる。何か悲しいことがあったに違いない。There's someone crying on the street. There is no mistake that something sad must have happened. (No other logical conclusion)
Caution
Be careful not to confuse 違いない, which is a noun plus an い-Adjective, with 違わない. 違わない is the negative form of the う-Verb 違う. While 違いない means 'there is no mistake/doubt', 違わない simply means 'does not differ' or 'is not wrong'.
