To form this, simply add み to the stem of an い-Adjective or a な-Adjective. The stem, or 語幹, is the part of the adjective that remains after dropping the final い or な.
- この映画には物語の深みがある。This movie's story has a real sense of depth.
- 彼の目には深い悲しみが見えた。I could see a deep sadness in his eyes.
- 彼の表情からは真剣みが伝わってきた。You could feel the seriousness from his expression.
- 彼の言葉には特別な重みがあった。His words carried a special weight.
Caution
The key difference from the English '-ness' is that み describes the inherent quality or overall impression of something, rather than a quantifiable level. It points to a stable characteristic or condition, not something that is being measured for its degree.
- この荷物の重みは何キロですか。What is the weight of this luggage in kilograms? (Unnatural, as み implies a figurative quality, not a measurable amount)
- このチョコレートの苦みが好きだ。I like the bitterness of this chocolate. (Natural, as it refers to the quality of bitterness, not a specific measurable level)
Furthermore, み can be written with the kanji 味, which means 'taste' or 'flavor'. In such cases, み often refers to a quality that is perceived through the senses, like taste, color, or other physical sensations.
- このトマトソースは酸味がきいているね。The acidity in this tomato sauce really stands out, doesn't it? (The quality of sourness, not its measurable pH level)
- この古い紙は少し黄みがかっている。This old paper has a slight yellowish tint to it. (The quality of being yellow, not a measurable color value)
