Explanation
When the particle と is paired with the て-form of the verb 並ぶ (to line up), it creates the expression と並んで. This is used to say that something is 'on par with (A)', 'alongside (A)', or 'as well as (A)'.
A noun or noun phrase will always come before と並んで.
- ラーメンは寿司と並んで、海外で人気のある日本食だ。Ramen, along with sushi, is a popular Japanese food overseas.
- このレストランでは、カレーライスがハンバーグと並んでよく注文されます。At this restaurant, curry rice is ordered just as frequently as the hamburg steak.
The dictionary form, 並ぶ, can also be combined with ほど to express that something (B) is 'so... that it rivals (A)', or 'to the same degree as (A)'.
- 大阪は東京と並ぶほど大きな都市だ。Osaka is a huge city, on a level with Tokyo.
- この歌手はあの有名な歌手と並ぶほど歌がうまいが、まだあまり知られていない。This singer is good enough to rival that famous one, but they aren't very well-known yet.
