ずには居られない
Cannot help doing something, Cannot resist doing something
Structure
Explanation
As we saw in the lesson on ずに, ず is an auxiliary verb that functions as a classical negative marker. While rare in everyday speech, it persists in certain grammatical patterns. It serves the same purpose as ない, indicating that an action is not performed. This is followed by the case marking particle に, the adverbial particle は, and いられない, the negative potential form of the verb いる. Together, ずにはいられない expresses an irresistible urge, often translated as 'can't help but (do something)' or 'feel compelled to (do something)'.
To use ずにはいられない, you must attach it to the indeterminate form of a verb. This is the same verb stem that is used before ない.
- あの子猫はとてもかわいいので、頭を撫でずにはいられない。That kitten is so adorable, I can't help but pet its head.
- 彼のジョークはいつも面白くて、笑わずにはいられない。His jokes are always so funny that you can't help but laugh.
While ずにはいられない is commonly rendered as 'cannot resist doing something', its most literal interpretation is 'cannot exist without doing something'.
Caution
Special attention is needed when conjugating the verb する. Unlike the modern negative form しない, where ない attaches to し, the classical negative ず attaches to a different stem, せ, forming せず.
- 友達が困っているのを見て、心配せずにはいられない。When I see my friend having a hard time, I can't help but worry.
- 明日は大事なテストがあるから、今夜は勉強せずにはいられない。I have an important test tomorrow, so I have no choice but to study tonight.
