Explanation
考えられない is formed from the る-verb 考える, meaning 'to consider', and is its negative potential form. This expression frequently appears after the adverbial particle など (or its casual forms なんて and なんか) or after nominalizing phrases such as ということは.
In English, 考えられない is typically translated as 'it's unimaginable' or 'it's unthinkable,' which closely reflects its literal Japanese meaning.
- 昔は、インターネットで何でも買える時代が来るとは考えられなかったでしょう。Back in the day, it was probably unthinkable that a time would come when you could buy anything online.
- 親友に嘘をつくなんて、私には考えられない。Lying to my best friend is simply unthinkable to me.
- 彼があの仕事を辞めたとは考えられない。It's unthinkable that he quit that job.
- もしかして、それが冗談だったということは考えられないか？Is it unthinkable that maybe it was just a joke?
Caution
It is important to distinguish 考えられない, which expresses an inability to even conceive of something, from 考えない ('to not think') and 考えていない ('to not be thinking'). The latter two indicate a deliberate choice or state that is within the speaker's control. As such, only 考えられない can convey the nuance of something being unbelievable.
- 難しい問題については今は考えないことにした。I've decided not to think about difficult problems for now.
- 将来のキャリアについてはまだ具体的には考えていない。I'm not yet thinking about my future career in any specific detail.
- 自分のペットを捨てることなど、絶対に考えられない。Abandoning my own pet is something I find absolutely unimaginable.
