向き
Suitable for, Facing
Structure
Explanation
The noun 向き is commonly attached to other nouns, functioning as a suffix. It originates from the intransitive verb 向く, which means 'to face' or 'to turn toward'. When used as a suffix, it indicates that something is physically 'facing (A)' or is 'well-suited for (A)'.
- この仕事は外向的な人向きです。This job is suited for outgoing people.
- このアパートの窓は東向きです。This apartment's windows are east-facing.
- このパソコンは学生向きですか?Is this computer suitable for students?
Because 向き is derived from an intransitive verb, it suggests an inherent quality or natural orientation. This nuance means that while something may be 'suitable for (A)', it was not necessarily created with that specific purpose or audience in mind.
Caution
In contrast, 向け, which comes from the transitive verb 向ける, is the more common choice for expressing that something was specifically made for or targeted at (A).
- このおもちゃは幼児向けに設計されています。This toy is designed for toddlers. (Intended for toddlers)
- この公園は平らで安全なので、小さな子供向きですね。This park is flat and safe, so it's well-suited for small children, isn't it? (Not necessarily designed only for children, but inherently suitable)
The main distinction between 向き and 向け is that 向き describes what is 'appropriate for (A)' based on its nature, while 向け describes what is 'made for (A)' based on its purpose.
