Deriving from the same kanji as 難しい ('difficult'), 難い is a suffix that also expresses difficulty. When used as がたい, it attaches to the conjunctive form (verb stem) to mean that something is 'hard to do'. In contemporary Japanese, がたい is almost exclusively written using hiragana.
- あの人の行動は許しがたいが、そうするしかない。What that person did is hard to forgive, but I have no other choice.
- 本人には言いがたかったから黙っていたけど、歯に何かついていたよ。It was hard to tell him directly so I kept quiet, but he had something in his teeth.
When compared to にくい, which can suggest that something is merely 'awkward' or 'uncomfortable' to perform, がたい is used for situations involving 困難であること 'things that are exceptionally difficult, emotionally taxing, or practically unachievable'. Because of this distinction, がたい is significantly stronger than にくい and often suggests that an action is nearly impossible.
- このお箸は使いにくい。These chopsticks are a bit hard to use. (Using them is physically awkward for me)
- その説明は理解しがたいと思うけど、本当なんだ。I know this explanation is hard to comprehend, but it's the truth! (The nature of the explanation itself makes it difficult to understand)
