Explanation
The word 左右 is a noun composed of the characters for 'left' and 'right'. However, it is very commonly used as a する verb to express how much one thing can determine the outcome of another. This sense of command can be translated as 'to influence', 'to dictate', 'to impact', or 'to govern'.
左右する can be used to show the effect on an entire preceding clause, or it can be attached to a specific noun to clarify what is being influenced or controlled.
- その一つの選択が、彼の将来を大きく左右するだろう。That one choice will likely greatly influence his future.
- どの戦略を選ぶかが、試合の結果を左右することになる。Which strategy you choose will end up determining the outcome of the match.

The passive form, 左右される, is also very common. This structure is typically used when the subject of the sentence is the very thing that is being controlled or influenced, rather than a general concept like こと (thing/matter) that refers to a previous clause.
- あの人は周りの意見に考えを左右されることが多いです。That person's thoughts are often influenced by the opinions of others.
- 観光業は経済の状況に大きく左右される分野です。Tourism is a field that is greatly affected by the state of the economy.
Caution
左右する suggests that (A) has decisive control over (B), making it much stronger than the verb 'to affect', 影響する. For this reason, the meaning of 左右する is sometimes closer to 'to govern' or 'to dictate' in English. The fundamental Japanese meaning is 思うままに動かす, 'to manipulate something at will'.
