直す
To do over, To redo
Structure
Explanation
The verb 直す indicates that an action is being 'redone' or 'done over'. This is typically because the initial result was not good enough. To form this grammar, you attach 直す to the stem of the main verb (the part before ます).
- ケーキがうまく焼けなかったから、焼き直します。The cake didn't bake well, so I'm going to rebake it.
- レポートを書きなおす。To rewrite the report.
When using this pattern with する verbs, the conjugation is slightly different. する changes to its stem form, し, before 直す is added. In casual conversation, you might see やる used in place of する. As a う-Verb, やる conjugates to やり直す.
- 自己紹介をし直す。To re-introduce myself.
- このテストはやり直す事が出来ないから、頑張って。You can't retake this test, so do your best.
Caution
Be careful not to mix up 直す (to fix/redo) with 治す (to cure an illness). The kanji 直 carries the meaning of 'correct' or 'straight', which relates to the idea of 'correcting' an action or making it 'straight' again.
