とうとう is an adverb used to convey that something has 'finally' or 'at long last' occurred. While Japanese offers several ways to express this, とうとう is particularly common. It originates from the kanji 到頭, which combines 到 (to arrive) and 頭 (the end/conclusion). Consequently, 'finally' and 'in the end' are its most frequent translations. As with many Japanese adverbs, とうとう is typically positioned at the start of a clause or sentence.
- とうとう彼女が結婚したか...So she finally got married... (After all this time, she's gotten married, has she?)
- とうとう新しい車を買う。I'm finally buying a new car. (After a long wait, I am going to buy a new car)
Although とうとう is most often written in hiragana, understanding its kanji origin is useful for grasping its specific nuance. This nuance is that a situation has 'concluded', typically after a prolonged period of waiting, effort, or struggle.
This adverb can be applied to both positive and negative conclusions. Its primary focus is on the extended time it took to reach the result, rather than on whether the result itself was good or bad.
- とうとう週末だ！It's finally the weekend! (Good result)
- とうとううちの犬が死んでしまった。Our dog finally passed away. (Bad result)
Caution
とうとう is not used for things you have been waiting for that happen on their own, without any preceding effort or action taken toward achieving that outcome.
The changing of seasons is a perfect illustration. You may want to exclaim 'finally, it's spring!', but this is not an event that anyone worked to bring about; it simply occurred naturally. In such instances, いよいよ is the correct choice, carrying a nuance of 'at last' or 'the time has come' for something anticipated to begin.
