と聞いた
I heard that
Structure
Verb + と聞いた
[い]Adjective + と聞いた
[な]Adjective + (だ) + と聞いた
Noun + (だ) + と聞いた
Explanation
The quoting particle と is frequently combined with other verbs to form useful, set expressions in Japanese. One such phrase is と聞いた, which is used to say 'I heard that (A)'.
と聞いた can follow any complete clause, which represents the content of what the speaker heard.
- 兄が来月結婚すると聞いた。I heard that my older brother is getting married next month.
- あの新しいレストランの料理はとてもおいしいと聞いた。I heard that the food at that new restaurant is very delicious.
- この公園は夜はとても静かだと聞いた。I heard that this park is very quiet at night.
- 田中さんの趣味は釣りだと聞いた。I heard that Tanaka-san's hobby is fishing.
Caution
In casual speech, だ is frequently dropped after nouns and な-Adjectives before と聞いた. Although this is very common in everyday conversation, it is considered grammatically informal.
- 君は野菜が嫌いと聞いたけど、本当なの?I heard that you dislike vegetables, but is that true?
- 明日は祝日と聞いた。I heard that tomorrow is a public holiday.
