Explanation
(A) ように～てほしい is a Japanese grammar pattern that connects the auxiliary verb, ようだ, with the てほしい structure, which expresses a desire for someone else to do something. Since ようだ is modifying the verb that comes after it, it takes its adverbial form, ように.
This grammar is used to express a wish for someone to perform an action 'in such a way that (A)' or 'like (A)'.
- プールで泳げるようになってほしい。I want you to get to a point where you can swim in the pool.
- 息子が一人で服を着られるようになってほしい。I hope my son becomes able to dress himself.
- あなたには鳥のように自由に生きてほしい。I want you to live freely, like a bird.
- もっと先生のように分かりやすく説明してほしい。I need you to explain it more clearly, like a teacher does.
Remember that the particle の is needed to connect a noun to ように.
The particle に or が can be used to mark the entity that the speaker has a desire for. Generally, に is used for people, whereas が is frequently used for inanimate objects or situations.
- あなたに料理が上手にできるようになってほしい。I want you to become good at cooking.
- 病気が早く治るように薬を飲んでほしい。I want you to take your medicine so that you can get better soon.
Fun Fact
On occasion, が and に might be interchanged when one of them has already appeared elsewhere in the sentence. This is typically done to prevent the sentence from sounding redundant or to clarify who or what the subject is.
- 妹に恋人ができるようになってほしい。I hope my little sister can find a boyfriend.
