This grammar connects a continuing action (A), shown with ている, to a second event (B) using 間に. It signifies that (B) happened at some point during the time (A) was in progress. The events don't have to be related, but (B) must be completed within the duration of (A). This structure often translates as 'while (A) was going on, (B) happened'.
- シャワーを浴びている間に友達から電話がかかってきた。A friend called while I was taking a shower.
- 本を読んでいる間にいつの間にか寝てしまった。I fell asleep without realizing it while I was reading a book.
Frequently, ている間に is used for situations where event (B) happens unexpectedly or without the speaker's direct involvement. This is a common tendency, but not a strict rule.
- 買い物をしている間に雨が降り始めた。It started to rain while I was out shopping.
