Structure
Explanation
The conjunctive particle て is known for connecting actions, but it also serves to contrast two related items or situations. This function is similar in spirit to the contrastive nuance of the topic marker は. To identify this usage, you should check if the two clauses are being presented as parallel facts, rather than as a strict sequence of events where '(A) happens, then (B) happens'. Let's review some examples.
- 兄は宿題をして弟はテレビを見ている。My older brother is doing his homework, while my younger brother is watching TV.
- 夫は会社に行って、妻は子供を学校に送った。My husband went to work, and my wife took the kids to school.
- 兄はアニメを見て弟はニュースを見る。My older brother watches anime, and my younger brother watches the news.
Because of this contrastive quality, て is sometimes translated as 'while'. The key difference between this use of て and other grammar for expressing 'while' or 'but' is that the two clauses joined by て are always presented with equal importance. By comparison, grammar points like けど, のに, or だが tend to imply that one part of the sentence is more significant or unexpected than the other.
- この時計は安くて機能もいい。This watch is inexpensive, and its features are good too. (Two positive points are presented with equal importance)
- この時計は安いけど機能もいい。This watch is inexpensive, but its features are also good. (Emphasis is placed on the good features, which are a positive surprise for the price)

空が晴れていて暖かかった。

ケンさんは本を読んで、マリアさんは手紙を書いている。

風が吹いて葉が舞う。
The wind blows and the leaves dance.
おじいさんはよく散歩に行って、おばあさんはよく庭で花を育てる。

姉はパスタを作れて、ケーキも上手に焼ける。
My older sister can make pasta, and she can also bake cakes well.
この町は賑わっていて、歴史が深くてとても面白いよ。
This town is bustling and has a deep history, it's really interesting!
兄は大学に進学して、私は専門学校に入った。
My older brother went on to university, and I entered a vocational school. (but・contrast)
