Explanation
The Japanese expression かどうか is used to embed a 'yes or no' question inside a larger sentence. It merges the questioning particle か with どう ('how'). The structure (A) かどうか (B) is typically translated as 'whether or not (A), (B)'.
To use かどうか, attach it directly after a plain form verb, an adjective, or a noun. This clause is then followed by the rest of the sentence (B).
- 明日、雨が降るかどうか分からない。I don't know whether or not it will rain tomorrow.
- 値段を見ていないからこの本が高いかどうか分からない。Since I haven't looked at the price, I don't know whether or not this book is expensive.
- この道が安全かどうか分からない。I don't know whether or not this road is safe.
- 顔を覚えていないから、その人が先生かどうかわからない。I don't remember their face, so I don't know whether or not that person is the teacher.
While 'whether or not' serves as the most common English equivalent, a more direct translation of かどうか would be something like 'if it is (A), or if it is otherwise, (B)'.
