ながら
While ~ing, During, As
Structure
Explanation
The conjunction particle ながら has two main functions in Japanese. These distinct uses are as follows:
同時の動き - Two actions that are taking place at the same time.
確定の逆説 - A situation where two things exist in contrast to one another.
In this grammar lesson, we will concentrate exclusively on the 同時の動き function. To form this structure, attach ながら to the ます-stem of the first verb (A), followed by the second verb (B) in the main clause. In English, this is typically translated as 'while'.
- テレビを見ながら晩ご飯を食べます。I eat dinner while watching TV.
- 歩きながら電話で話していたら、友達に会った。When I was talking on the phone while walking, I ran into a friend.
In this construction, the second action (B) is treated as the main focus of the sentence, while the first action (A) describes the background activity during which (B) occurs.
Caution
Since action (B) is the primary clause and action (A) is a secondary, related activity, both verbs must be performed by the same person or subject.
- 学生の頃は、アルバイトをしながら日本語を勉強していた。Back when I was a student, I studied Japanese while also working a part-time job. (Natural Japanese, as both activities occurred during the same general period: 'when I was a student'.)
- お風呂に入りながら仕事のことを考える。I think about work while taking a bath. (Natural Japanese, as both actions are being done by the speaker concurrently.)
- 母が料理をしながら、雨が降り始めた。It started to rain while my mother was cooking. (Unnatural Japanese. Even though these actions are simultaneous, they are performed by different subjects: 'mother' and 'the rain'.)
Fun Fact
To express the contrastive 確定の逆説 meaning, ながら is typically followed by the particle も. The combination ながらも is a distinct grammar point that will be covered in a future lesson. In this pattern, も emphasizes the speaker's surprise that situations (A) and (B) can be true at the same time.
- このカバンは小さいながらも、たくさん物が入る。This bag holds a lot of things, even though it's small.
