Explanation

In a previous lesson, we saw that たところ (or ていたところ) means that an action has just been completed. In a similar fashion, ているところ is used to express that an action is currently in progress. This grammar point emphasizes that someone is in the very act of doing something, and is often translated as 'doing (A) right now' or 'in the process of doing (A)'.

部屋(へや)を掃除(そうじ)しているところだから後(あと)で手伝(てつだ)うよ。
I'm in the middle of cleaning my room right now, so I'll help you later.
公園(こうえん)でうちのネコが木(き)に登(のぼ)っているところを見(み)た。
I saw my cat climbing a tree in the park.

Caution

Because ているところ strongly implies that a person is occupied with an activity, it isn't used to describe an ongoing action that is suddenly interrupted. In situations where an action in progress was cut short, ているところだった is used, followed by a second phrase that explains the interruption.

シャワーを浴(あ)びているところだったから、インターホンが聞(き)こえなかった。
I was in the middle of taking a shower, so I couldn't hear the doorbell.
友達(ともだち)と話(はな)しているところだったから、メールに気(き)づかなかった。
I was busy talking with a friend, so I didn't notice your email.

今(いま)、旅行(りょこう)の準備(じゅんび)をしているところです。

I am in the process of preparing for my trip right now.

今(いま)、バスの運転手(うんてんしゅ)さんはバスを運転(うんてん)しているところです。

家(いえ)に帰(かえ)った時(とき)、妻(つま)が夕食(ゆうしょく)を料理(りょうり)しているところだった。

When I got home, my wife was in the middle of cooking dinner (at that moment).
