風
-style, Way, Fashion
Structure
Noun + 風 + (の) + Noun
Explanation
風 is a suffix that indicates something is 'like (A)', or has the 'feel of (A)'. Despite its literal meaning of 'wind of (A)', it is used to express that something resembles a particular style or manner.
To apply this grammar, simply add 風 after a noun to show that something has the characteristics of that noun.
- 韓国風メイクが人気です。Korean-style makeup is popular.
- 中華風スープを飲みました。I had some Chinese-style soup.
の can also follow 風 when it is used to modify another noun. This pattern shows that '(B) is of an (A) style'.
- イタリア風の家を建てたいです。I want to build an Italian-style house.
- 関西風のうどんが好きです。I like Kansai-style udon.
Caution
When used in this grammatical pattern, the suffix is only pronounced ふう, and never かぜ, which is the standard reading of 風.
