といわれている generally means 'it is said that (A)' or 'is considered to be (A)'. Similar to とされている, this structure uses the quoting particle と combined with the passive form of a verb to convey a widely-accepted idea or public sentiment. In this pattern, the verb used is 言う (to say).
While とされている often implies a 'judgement' or 'conclusion', といわれている focuses more on a direct 引用 or 'quotation' of what people commonly say. Simply attach といわれている to the end of a clause to present it as a general opinion or rumor.
- 納豆は体にいいといわれている。It is said that natto is good for your health.
- 北海道の冬はとても寒いといわれている。It's said that winters in Hokkaido are extremely cold.
You will frequently encounter this grammar point written in kana only, without the kanji for 言う. The meaning remains exactly the same whether the kanji is used or not.
