それ
That
Structure
Explanation
Much like これ, それ functions as a pronoun in Japanese (specifically, a demonstrative pronoun). それ is used to mean 'that' and refers to something that is physically or conceptually nearer to the listener than to the speaker.
- それが答えだ。That's the answer.
- それは良いですね。That's great.
In these examples, それ is used to indicate something that is either physically closer to the listener or directly related to what the listener has said or is experiencing.
Additionally, それ can be used to refer to a topic or item that was previously brought up in the discussion. This could be a point made moments ago, or something stated by the other person.
- それは誰のですか?Whose is that? (Referring to an item just mentioned)
- それはちょっと…That's a little... (A polite way to express hesitation or refuse something just suggested)
