Explanation
To create the negative form of a る-Verb, you follow the standard conjugation pattern: drop the final る from the dictionary form and attach a new ending. For negation, this ending will be either ない for casual speech or ません for polite situations.
- 弟は朝早く起きない。My younger brother doesn't wake up early in the morning.
- 先生の声が聞こえません。I can't hear the teacher's voice.
Although ない and ません are typically translated as 'not', their meaning can vary depending on the context. They can express a general negative ('don't'), an inability to do something ('can't'), or a refusal to do something ('won't').
- 悲しいのに、涙が出ない。Even though I'm sad, tears won't come out. (Unintentionally not)
- 彼に答えを教えません。I won't tell him the answer. (Intentionally not)
It's important to know that both ない and ません function as auxiliary verbs (ません being a form of ます), which means they can be conjugated further into other forms.
Caution
Be careful not to confuse the verbal negative ending ない with the one used for the negative form of adjectives. When used with adjectives, ない behaves like an い-Adjective, not an auxiliary verb, and thus has a different set of conjugation patterns.
