のが好き
Like doing, Love doing
Structure
Explanation
To say that you enjoy doing an activity, you can use the pattern ~のが好き. It always follows the plain (dictionary) form of a verb.
- 私はクラシック音楽を聴くのが好き。I like listening to classical music.
- 妹は絵を描くのが好きです。My younger sister enjoys drawing pictures.
As shown in the sentences above, both Ichidan verbs and Godan verbs connect to this grammar point in their plain forms. The particle combination のが works here to nominalize the verb phrase, essentially turning the action into a 'thing' that can be liked. To talk about something you liked to do in the past, the verb stays in its plain form. Instead, you will conjugate 好き into its past tense form.Caution
You can also use this grammar pattern to ask someone about their preferences. Simply add the question particle か to the end of the sentence.
- どんなスポーツをするのが好きですか。What sports do you like to play?
- 一人で旅行するのが好きですか?Do you like traveling by yourself?
