が
But, However
Structure
[い]Adjective + が
[な]Adjective + だ + が
Noun + だ + が
Explanation
The particle が serves several roles in Japanese, but they all share a central concept: placing emphasis on (A) in contrast with (B). In this particular pattern, が functions as a conjunction that connects two clauses, and is typically translated as 'but' or 'however'.
This use of が attaches directly to the plain or polite form of verbs and い-Adjectives. When following a noun or a な-Adjective, however, it must be preceded by a form of the copula, such as だ or です.
- 毎日日本語を勉強するが、漢字は苦手だ。I study Japanese every day, but I'm not very good at kanji.
- このラーメンは安いが、とても美味しい。This ramen is cheap, but it's very tasty.
- あの歌手は有名だが、私は好きじゃない。That singer is famous, but I don't like them.
- この町は静かだが、不便だ。This town is quiet, but inconvenient.
As seen in the sentences above, が is used to present a statement (A) before introducing contrasting or supplementary information (B). Because it directly asserts this contrast, this usage of が is often found in more formal speech and writing.
Caution
On occasion, you may hear a sentence finish with が. When this happens, it indicates that there is more to say, but the speaker is leaving it unstated because it is either implied by the context or they wish to be indirect.
- ええ、便利ですが。Yes, it is convenient, but… (there is some kind of drawback)
