Explanation
The word 誰 is the primary Japanese question word used to ask about a person. Its precise English meaning shifts depending on which particle it is paired with.
Who called?
Who were you talking to?
Whose umbrella is that?
It seems like someone's at the entrance.
Who are you giving this present to?
Who do you want to invite to the party?

Caution
In situations requiring more politeness, other words are used instead of 誰. For honorific language, どなた is appropriate, and for general polite speech, どちらさま can be used.
