Was, Were (Past tense)
Structure
［な］Adjective + だった
Explanation
To state that something 'was' a noun or 'was' a certain way (using a な-Adjective), you must use the past tense forms だった (casual) or でした (polite). These are formed from the present tense markers だ and です. To create だった, the past tense ending った is attached to だ. For でした, the す of です is changed to し before adding た.
- あのテストは簡単だった。That test was easy.
- その映画は有名でした。That movie was famous.
Caution
Please note that い-Adjectives are not used with だった or でした, as they have their own unique conjugation method for the past tense.

元気だった。
He was healthy.
マリアだった。
It was Maria.
それは嘘でした。
That was a lie.
スポーツが嫌いだった。
I hated sports. (Sports were disliked by me)
簡単だった。
It was easy.
有名だった。
It was famous.
ホテルは豪華でした。
The hotel was luxurious.

That day was the last chance.

The park was safe.
