どこ
Where
Structure
Explanation
The interrogative word どこ is part of the どれ series, which is used for asking about unidentified things. どこ specifically pinpoints a location. In the same way that どれ means 'which one', どこ means 'which location', or simply 'where'.
- 今度のデートはどこに行く?Where should we go for our next date?
- トイレはどこにありますか?Where is the restroom?
Caution
Take care not to mix up どこ and どっち. While both can mean 'where' in English, どっち is typically used to ask about a general direction or a choice between two options, while どこ asks for a specific location.
- 出口はどっちですか?Which direction is the exit?
- 一番近い本屋はどこですか?Where is the nearest bookstore?
