~て (Qualities and States)
And..., Both and (Conjunctive)
Structure
[な]Adjective + で + Phrase
Noun + で + Phrase
Explanation
Much like the て form for verbs, the て form of an い-Adjective, or the で form of a noun (or な-Adjective), acts as a connector and generally means 'and'.
Expanding on the function of linking two adjectives, this pattern allows you to connect an adjective or noun to a complete clause. To do this, simply attach the second phrase (B) right after the くて form of an い-Adjective, or the で form of a noun or な-Adjective. The clause that follows will function as its own independent sentence and requires no further changes.
- この鞄は軽くてたくさん物が入ります。This bag is light and can hold a lot of things.
- この町は静かでとても住みやすいです。This town is quiet and very livable.
- 山田さんは医者で毎日忙しいです。Mr. Yamada is a doctor and is busy every day.
It is worth noting that while they serve a similar connecting function, て and で are grammatically distinct. The て that follows い-Adjectives is the same connective particle used for verbs. On the other hand, で is a conjugated form of the copula だ. This is the same で that appears in the more formal expression である, which you will study in a later lesson.
Caution
Like other て forms (such as ている), the connective て (or で) form can convey several nuances based on context. These meanings include the following.
Linking - Functions like 'and' in English to join statements.
Reason - Expresses 'because of (A)' or 'since (A) is the case'.
Manner - Describes the way an action is performed, like 'doing (B) by means of (A)'.
- その部屋は広くて明るい。That room is spacious and bright. (Linking)
- 道が狭くて危ない。The road is dangerous because it's narrow. (Reasons)
- 毎日歩いて駅まで行きます。I get to the station by walking every day. (Manner)
Caution
Remember that いい is an irregular adjective; its て form is always よくて, not いくて.
