Explanation
Just like the verb て form, the て form for い-Adjectives and the で form for nouns and な-Adjectives act as a connector, similar to 'and' in English. This grammar allows you to describe something by listing several of its characteristics.
To conjugate an い-Adjective into this form, replace the final い with く and then attach て.
For nouns and な-Adjectives, you just need to add で directly to the word. Do not include な or だ.
- このレストランは安くておいしい。This restaurant is inexpensive and delicious.
- この公園は静かで広い。This park is quiet and spacious.
- 田中さんは先生で作家だ。Mr. Tanaka is a teacher and an author.
It's important to understand that て and で have distinct grammatical origins. The て used with い-Adjectives is the same conjunctive particle seen with verbs, highlighting their verb-like nature. In contrast, で is a conjugative form of the copula だ, related to the formal copula である, which you'll encounter in a later lesson.
Caution
Similar to the various uses of the verb て form, the て and で forms for adjectives and nouns are also versatile and can express more than one idea. The main uses are listed below.
Connecting ideas - Functions like the English word 'and'.
Expressing cause - Similar to 'because of (A)' or 'due to (A)'.
Describing manner - Can mean 'doing (B) in an (A) manner'.
- この部屋は静かで明るい。This room is quiet and bright.
- 事故で電車が遅れました。The train was delayed due to an accident.
- 彼女はいつも笑って話します。She always speaks with a smile.
Caution
Remember the special conjugation for いい (good). As with its other forms, it becomes よくて, never いくて.
